Our first destination on the South Island was Abel Tasman National Park, along the eastern part of the north shore. There was plenty to do in the beautiful outdoors, particularly hiking and kayaking. Shuttle boats running up and down the coastline made the remote areas quite accessible, and we took advantage of one to hike one-way along the first 20km (of the 51km length) on the famed Coastal Track.

Beautiful beaches and bays along the Abel Tasman Coastal Track
    The track winds through lush
    forests full of tree ferns
    Magnificent sandy beaches
    around every bend
Streams trickle through the forest We kayaked out to Tonga Island
    and saw NZ fur seals
This goat was guarding our lodge
    (and mowing the lawn)
